San Jose Police Department opens Community Policing Center in South San Jose -- February 26, 2000

Reported and written by Scott Scholz

Saturday, February 26th, 2000, the San Jose Police Department opened the first Community Policing Center in South San Jose at Oakridge Mall next to Michael's and Walgreens. The Community Policing Center was a concept San Jose Police Chief Bill Lansdowne brought from his time as Police Chief in Richmond. District 10 Councilmember Pat Dando, many police officials and volunteers from the SJPD Volt program were on hand to meet and greet the neighbors who came to see the new 2000 square foot store front center. After touring the facilities, we had our two year old son finger printed and photographed for our personal records. It is one of the services the policing center offers for parents to have a record of their children in case anything were to happen. A computer is also set up for viewing Megan's Law information. There is also a conference room available for use for neighborhood associations and nonprofit groups.

Councilmember Dando with Lt. Lewis, Lt. Evans, and Capt. Delgado who made the Community Policing Center Happen. Parents can bring their children into the Community Policing Center to have them fingerprinted.
