This letter was sent home with Santa Teresa Elementary School students. It was dated June 3, 2002.

For your Child's Safety:

Strangers and Dangers: Our school has received two reports of strangers in the Baldwin Elementary School area and the Alex Anderson Elementary Schoool area approaching children on their way home from school. The Police were immediately informed. In addition, a teenager confronted two of our students on their way home from school. Fortunately no one was hurt. Police have been notified. This is a good time to meet with your child(ren) and review a safe route to and from school and what to do if approached by a stranger. "Individuals who want to do bad things to children go where children are!" Please discuss this serious issue with your child. Remember, supervision is only provided 15 minutes prior to the beginning of their starting school and 15 minutes at the close of the day. Children should not be on the campus before 7:45 am (Early Instruction only!) or 8:45 am for everyone else. Also, children are to go home immediately after school.

Dear Parents:

A report of an incident in a nearby area was brought to my attention late this morning. The context of the report is as follows:

A school age girl was approached by a man in a car. The man was approximately thirty years old. The girl ran home. Subsequently, the police were called, and they responded immediately. The police are following up on the incident.

Please let reported incidences of this sort serve as an important reminder of how urgent it is to continually discuss safety practices with your children. When such practices are in place, children are prepared to react in a safe manner as this girl did.

Sincerely,

Julie Craig
Principal
