Subj: Incidents with vehicles, garages on FOOTHILL DRIVE
From: [email protected] (Donna R. Gibeau)

Dear neighbors,

In the past week, the following things happened at my home and my next-door neighbor's home on Foothill Drive, between Allen Avenue and Fernglen Drive.

At approximately 10:00PM Wed evening (07/24), the alarm went off in my neighbor's work van which was parked along the curb. When my neighbor went outside, he also discovered that his personal pickup truck, which was parked in the driveway, had been rummaged through (the driver's side door of the truck was wide open and papers, etc. were strewn about). Nothing was taken from either vehicle. My neighbor is usually very careful about locking his pickup truck, yet there was no sign of forced entry. The work van is brand new, and because he was still somewhat unfamiliar with the vehicle, he apparently had engaged the alarm without locking the doors.

Two nights later, the same neighbors awoke in the morning to find that their overhead garage door had mysteriously opened during the night. They are positive that it was closed when they went to bed. Again, nothing was taken.

Last night (Sat 07/27), my roommate and I returned home from a concert at approximately midnight. We absolutely, positively closed the overhead garage door (and, even double-checked it again an hour later before going to bed). However, when I went out to the garage today at 9AM, it was wide open. Again, nothing was taken.

None of our garage door remote controls are missing. And, we do not keep the remote controls inside the vehicles that are parked outdoors overnight.

Today, my neighbor reported all of these incidents at the San Jose Police Department's community/neighborhood station next to Oakridge Mall.

Regarding the garage door incidents: I'm not sure if somebody is going through the neighborhood with some type of device that "clones" garage door remote controls, or scans for the proper frequency.

We are now using a sliding heavy steel bolt, installed on the inside of the garage door, to prevent the door from opening either by remote control or by manually lifting.

BE AWARE, and BE CAREFUL.
